If you are looking for coils that help produce more vapor you are in the right place.  When looking to chuck bigger clouds there are certain things you have to think about, and believe it or not, but the type of coil you use is actually only a small part to the whole puzzle of vapor production.

The Mechanics of Bigger Clouds

The mechanics behind bigger clouds take several factors into consideration:

Airflow: The first thing you need to consider is the amount of airflow you will need to get those big fluffy clouds.  I personally refer to it as the “Goldilocks effect.”  Too little airflow or too much can result in your clouds being thin and wispy.  Ultimately, you’ll have to find the rebuildable atomizer that works best for you. Gauge of Wire: We will be going for low ohm builds, therefore the thicker the gauge (lower the number), the better.  Just remember that every time the gauge goes down, the number of wraps goes up.  Trying to get to a 0.5Ω dual coil with 18 gauge wire is horrendous – do not try it. Inner Diameter of Coil:  The larger the inner diameter of your coil, the more surface area your cotton can touch.  So, if you are wrapping around a 4mm screw driver/rod, you will get much better results than around a 1mm.  The larger hole allows for more e-liquid to get to the coils quickly, and prevents any dry hits.  Every build I talk about today will be on a 3mm coil jig. Coil Positioning:  Where ever possible, using a 3-post deck, try to center your build so the center of the coil lines up with the center of the positive post.  It is a good habit to get into as it allows you to have even wicking on either side of the build, therefore allowing e-liquid to get to either side of the coil at the same time.  Once again we are thinking about dry hit protection. Battery safety: The number 1 rule of chasing clouds is: do not blow your hand off.  For more information on battery safety check Battery Safety on our sister site.

Coil Types

If you are comfortable with building your own coils, these are all coils that can, and will, produce massive clouds.  As I previously stated, they will all be on a 3mm screw driver / coil jig.  They’re all builds that I personally have run in competitions and are all classed as super sub-ohm builds.  Make sure you use an Ohms law calculator and that you have the hardware to run these builds.  My suggestion is that you do a wrap or two higher until you are comfortable going this low.

Dual Coil 24 Gauge: 4 wraps on each side will ohm you out at 0.16 ohms.  This can be used on a single tube mod with the right battery.  The ramp up time is relatively quick and will create a massive plume that can win competitions. Parallel Dual Coils: 8 wraps on each side will ohm you out at 0.14 ohms, or somewhere in that region (you doubled the wire so you have to double the number of wraps).  This is a build for a parallel box mod, as the ramp up time on a single will drain your battery before you even get a hit.  Make sure the wire doesn’t cross at any point or it will give you a hot spot and short inside the coil, probably cutting the coil at that point and you will have to start over. Twisted 22 Gauge: 8 wraps on each side is pretty much the same as the parallel build above, but it looks prettier. 18 Gauge Continuous: 6 wraps on each side of the center post.  This can be used on a mechanical mod, but at your own risk.  If you are not an experienced cloud chaser who knows how to pulse your battery, do not attempt. Clapton Coils:  I personally do not use Clapton’s for competitions, but they can still produce great clouds and great flavor.  Ask around at you local shop as they may have some in stock, pre-made and ready to install.  Clapton’s are the only coils I will buy already made, just because I am too lazy to make my own.

Final Thoughts

The coils I have just described are all competition builds designed for advanced vapers and should be seen as literally coils for the biggest clouds you can produce.  Do not attempt these on your first build.  Take it slowly, learn what you are doing and how things work, and who knows… maybe I will be back-to-back with you.
